FUNKO POP: THE BIG BANG THEORY SHELDON COOPER
OK, so I
have not been very regular to this blog. My first post was way back in
November-2015 and I haven’t visited it ever since. I am really sorry for that.
I will try my best to be regular in posting, but please bear with me if I
don’t.
Well
enough of that. Let us start our review. I chose The Big Bang Theory toy for my
first review because it is one of my favourite shows on TV. The toy in question
here is made by an American company named Funko.
About Funko: Funko is an American company
that makes licensed pop-culture TV/movie collectible toys. It was founded in
1998 by Mike Becker as a bobblehead company who wanted to bring
nostalgia-themed toys back to mainstream. In 2005 Funko was sold, which is now
headed by Brian Mariotti as its president (kind of reminds me of Polly Pocket
being acquired by Mattel). And now, besides toys, Funko also sells other
products like USBs, T-shirts, headphones, lamps etc, all themed.
About product: The “Funko Pop” line is vinyl
figurines, characterised by large heads with black dots for eyes and very
little facial features. I think that’s what most people find adorable. Here’s
how my Funko Pop Sheldon Cooper looks in package:
I really
liked how Sheldon has been packed. It makes displaying him very easy and
appealing.
Here are
the sides of the box:
Left side
Right side
The side
on the left is solid, whereas the side on the right is transparent. The red
background in the right side has many “The Big Bang Theory” logos (I like
that).
Here’s
how the top and bottom of the pack look:
Top
Bottom
I really
liked how on the top side there’s just a picture of Sheldon and “Pop” logo and
nothing else.
Here’s
Sheldon out of box:
There’s
nothing holding Sheldon, no plastic ties, no rubber bands, nothing. He’s just
lodged in the cast of the plastic. It makes un-boxing him really easy.
Here’s Sheldon totally free:
The
wooden cube is just for making him look taller. He has brown hair and is
wearing a Green Lantern t-shirt, brown troussers and brown sneakers. He stands
a little below 9 CM tall (without the wooden block, of course).
Does he
not look cute? Well, don’t just fall for him yet.
It will
not take an expert to notice the smudgy paint work on Sheldon. Are collectibles
not supposed to be very delicately painted?
Here’s a
close-up of Sheldon’s head:
I see you.
The
arched eye-brows make Sheldon look displeased for some reason, which makes
total sense as there’s hardly anything that pleases Sheldon Cooper.
Sheldon
has no moving parts on his body, except for his head which can turn all the way
round:
I am not talking to
you, Sabyasachi.
After I
took photos of Sheldon, I put him back in the plastic cast and slipped him into
his box again and it looked as good as new. How cool is that!
About the product:
Funko products are not
available in stores anywhere in India. They are available only online. I
checked and found that they sell for $ 10(approx. Rs. 600) in the US. But here
in India, they sell from Rs. 500 to up to Rs. 5000 (or more, depending upon the
rarity and popularity of that character). I paid Rs. 500 (plus shipping) for
Sheldon from Amazon.in. When I last checked online The Big Bang Theory Funko Pops sold
for Rs. 3000 to Rs.7500 or more. I was just lucky to find Sheldon on sale.
My view on the product:
I really liked the
packaging on this product, very neat and makes displaying easy. And like many
others, I also liked the big head-beady eye design of it. But that’s it. The
sloppy paint work and no movable parts make this product not worth spending even
Rs. 500, let alone spending more for a rare character. But that’s just my
opinion. I have seen many collecting Funko Pop items, so there are people who
do not mind sloppy paint work. Finally, I leave it to you whether you prefer
buying it or not.
P.S.: I order almost all my toys
online; and some sellers are not very careful with the shipping packaging. So
if you see bumps and bruises on the packaging of the toys reviewed bear with me
for that too.
HAVE A GOOD DAY!
