CUPCAKE SURPRISE DOLL BY EMCO
I know I
know, I promised to be regular to post. And here I am, posting two months after
my last post. I am such a lazy bum. But let’s
all forget about all that and concentrate on our doll for today.
Last
year, when I was strolling around in a mall here in Bhubaneswar, I saw some
weird looking packages with attractive illustrations in a shop. Upon close
inspection I discovered each package had a giant, brightly coloured, pleasant
smelling plastic cupcake in it. The box read “Cupcake Surprise Doll” and had
instructions on how to transform the cupcake into a doll. I became curious and
bought one for myself. Here’s how the package looked from front:
FRONT
These
dolls are, as mentioned before, are Cupcake Surprise dolls by Emco.
About
Emco: I tried digging up more about Emco on internet. All I could find was it is an Indonesian company that has created toys like Pocket Morphers and Brix Racer.
I did
some more research and found that these dolls were earlier manufactured by
Tonka (in 1990) and later by Kenner (1991-93).
Tonka was later purchased by Hasbro, and the production of these dolls stopped.
Before Emco (2015), these dolls have been rebooted twice earlier, first by Fun
Source (1998) and then by Radica (2005).
Anyway,
here’s how the other sides of the package look like:
BACK
The back
of the package has names of all the 12 princesses in this series. Let’s see
what doll do I get.
RIGHT
The
right side of the package shows how many fragrances these dolls are available
in. There are a total 6 fragrances. Mine smells like chocolate.
LEFT
The
left side of the package has pictorial instructions on how to transform the
cupcake in to doll and back (like it’s some kind of rocket science).
TOP
It isn’t
apparent in the picture above, but the top of the package has 3 holes on it, so
that you can get a whiff of what the doll smells like in the store before
buying.
HOLES ON THE TOP OF THE BOX
I took the
cupcake out to see what was inside. The cupcake was held in place because it‘s
base was lodged in a thin cardboard sheet with a hole in the centre.
Here’s
what were inside the package:
Let’s
look at the brush, shall we?
It’s
a tiny, bright pink brush that is shaped like a flower bud (at least I think it
is a flower bud). I do not understand how a flower bud goes along with the
whole cupcake theme, but it is what it is. The brush can also be used on other
dolls that have soft, manageable hair.
Now
let’s look at the cupcake.
The base
is light blue, whereas the top is hot pink with blue, cream, purple
decorations. Here’s its top.
TOP OF THE CUPCAKE
Looks
delicious, doesn’t it? The base is soft, but the top is hard.
This
is what I found inside when I removed the top.
PEEK-A-BOO
I
turned the base inside-out, straightened the dress over the base to get this.
Isn’t
she pretty? She has green eyes and blond hair, which is tied in a pony tail. She’s
wearing a light blue dress which has net on her sleeves and around her waist. Her
hands are in karate chop position, like the 80’s Barbie.
Let's take a closer look at her face:
She has wide, green eyes and light pink lips. A very generic, yet pretty face. The hair rooting on
her head isn’t very dense. I don't know if this defect is limited to only my doll or if this is a general feature. The defect isn't very obvious though.
The
dress looked pretty, so I tried to remove it to get a better look at it, as
well as the doll body. Unfortunately, I could go beyond this point.
I think heard
a slight ripping noise while I was removing her dress, and decided not to test my
luck with it. Her torso looks like that of a Chelsea doll. As apparent from the
picture above, she’s cupcake base from waist down. She has no feet.
I placed
the top “hat” on her head and this is how she looked.
Such a
cutie! I tried to take some more pictures of her. She is not very poseable, but
she’s cute.
Oh, and
she stands about 14 CM tall with her hat on.
Arre
yaar! I forgot to find out her name. Let’s look at the pictures of all the
dolls printed on the back of the package, shall we?
So my
doll’s name is Lorie. Sounds like lorry.
My view on the product: These dolls are priced at Rs.
499, but they are available at discount on various shopping sites. I think this
is a good doll for Rs. 499. She might not be very posable, but she is
transformable, which might be fun for kids. She can be a little sister to
bigger 30 CM dolls, like Barbie or Steffi Love. She can be a good play time
mate. So I would recommend this doll. But do not go overboard and buy more that
1-2 dolls. She isn’t that cool.
HAVE A GOOD DAY!
